Project “Implementation of the Route of Al-Mutamid”

Cross-Border Cooperation Program Spain-Portugal 2007-2013 (POCTEP)

Implementation period: 2011-2014

This project was part of the Spain-Portugal Cross-Border Cooperation Program 2007-2013 and was co-financed with ERDF funds. El legado andalusí Andalusian Public Foundation was the leader of the project.

The objective of this project was to maintain and promote quality tourism based on sustainable development and the enhancement of common Spanish-Portuguese history. This cross-border route (which joins in Seville the Route of Washington Irving) implements in an early phase, the Route of al-Mutamid, the only one of the routes of El legado andalusí that reaches Portugal. The section of the route under study starts in the Portuguese town of Aljezur and ends in Cortegana, in the province of Huelva. With this new itinerary, and thanks to the European support, the routes activated by the Foundation totalled six, adding to the routes of the Caliphate, the Nasrids, the Washington Irving, the Almoravids and Almohads and the Umayyads, all them declared Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe.

Partners:El legado andalusí Andalusian Public Foundation (leader), Andalusia Business and Commerce Confederation (CECA), Regional Directorate of Culture of Algarve, Association for the Defence of Historical and Archaeological Heritage of Aljezur (ADPHA), City Council of Silves and City Council of Tavira.

Countries: Spain and Portugal
