AQUAMAN Project
AQUAtic systems’ evaluation for the Mitigation of wAter scarcity in mediterranean islaNds and coastal tourist destinations under severe pressure.
Programme Interreg Euro-Med
Project co-financed by the Interreg Euro-MED Program
Execution Period: April 2025 – July 2027

Co-financed by the Interreg Euro-MED Program, the AQUAMAN project, led by the Andalusian Public Foundation El legado andalusí, aims to mitigate water scarcity in Mediterranean islands and coastal cultural and tourist destinations under severe pressure, within the Euro-Mediterranean area. This transnational effort involves a consortium of six countries, with a multidisciplinary team made up of public entities, academic and research institutions, as well as authorities related to water treatment and cultural and sustainable tourism.
AQUAMAN focuses on strengthening the capacity of local authorities to manage water resources by valorizing non-conventional water sources, such as rainwater, stormwater, or treated wastewater, and reducing water demand in specific sectors. The project also seeks to optimize water distribution systems and transfer knowledge from successful EU-funded projects, including some from the H2020 and PRIMA programmes.
As part of its activities, AQUAMAN will develop a catalogue of transferable tools based on previous experiences and will create cultural and sustainable tourism laboratories to address water scarcity. The Mediterranean region is already facing serious water-related challenges such as droughts and rising temperatures, which further strain water reserves. The project aims to provide sustainable solutions for these communities, promoting more efficient and resilient water management in high-demand contexts such as tourist areas.
The Interreg Euro-MED Programme supports cooperation across 14 Mediterranean countries, funding projects that address shared challenges with a focus on sustainability, resilience, and smarter development. With €294 million for 2021–2027, the Programme unites public, private, and civil society partners to create a greener, climate-neutral region while enhancing governance and improving quality of life.
